The MTTS Trust brings to you six online regional camps on mathematical foundations for second year undergraduate students in Mathematics. About five hundred students are expected to be trained following the interactive MTTS methodology through these camps on online platforms.
The Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) programme is one of the most popular and significant training programmes in India. This programme has been running since 1993 and has made an impressive impact on mathematical scene in the country. Due to the unprecedented situation created by the pandemic, the MTTS Trust has added a new dimension by conducting the its programmes in an online platform since May 2020. In spite of some initial apprehensions, these programmes were held successfully without compromising the methodology and interactive nature of MTTS. The success of this venture is evident from the student’s efforts and feedback. The decision of MTTS Trust to organize more online camps is encouraged by this experience.
Background
“Foundation” is a unique course taught in MTTS Programmes to initiate the students to some fundamental topics of Mathematics. After attending a 2-week course on Foundations in the MTTS/ miniMTTS camps, almost all participants so far have experienced a change in their attitude, problem solving abilities and logical and analytical thinking. They also acquire a high level of confidence for self-study to undertake courses in higher mathematics. The objective of the regional camps is to transfer the positive changes that the Foundation course brings to MTTS participants, to many more students across the country.
Academic Plan
This will be a short course with Logic, Sets, Functions and Equivalence Relations as components based on the book “A Foundation Course in Mathematics” by Ajit Kumar, S. Kumaresan and B.K. Sarma.”
There will be six simultaneous regional camps from October 4th to 24th, 2020, each containing about 80 participants. In each camp, there will be four sessions each week, with three on alternate weekdays (Monday-Saturday), and one on Sunday. All sessions, except possibly on Sunday, will be in the afternoon. Each session will consist of a lecture (75 minutes), followed by group discussions (40 minutes).
The aim of the programme is to expose bright young students to the excitement of doing mathematics, to promote independent mathematical thinking and to prepare them for higher aspects of mathematics. The resource persons in each camp will include three faculty and fifteen tutors. The faculty will be active mathematicians with a commitment to teaching and from various leading institutions. The tutors are students and faculty who have had the experience, and understand the spirit, of the MTTS teaching methodology. The aim of the instructions is not to give routine lectures but to stimulate the participants to think and discover mathematical results.
Eligibility
Second year undergraduate students, who have completed one year (two semesters) of their B.Sc./B.A. programme, with Mathematics as one of their main subjects.
Students from all regions and areas, including rural and remote ones, are encouraged to apply. The selection will be on merit, based on consistently good academic records.
How to Apply
- Submit the application online using the form available at this link.
- Applicants must provide the marks/grades for the Mathematics papers of Class X (SSC) , Class XII (HSC), and (if results declared) first & second semester in their B.Sc./B.A. programme. Though it is not required to submit any marklist at the time of submission of application, the applicants may be asked to submit a scanned copy later.
- Applicant should give the contact the details of a teacher who may recommend for the applicant. We may contact him/her for verification of the academic performance details and to get his/her recommendation during the selection process. It is important to give the correct email address and phone number of teacher. Also, obtain his/her permission before giving the teacher details in the application form.
- Applicants may be asked to upload a scanned copy of their institute ID card as a JPG/PDF file. But they need not submit it at the time of initial application.
- Providing an email id ending with @gmail.com is mandatory, as several features of the online software Google classroom may be used during the course
- In case the applicant does not possess an institute ID card due to some reason, please provide a bonafide certificate with the photograph containing the present course/just completed course issued by the Head of the institution/Department or the applicant’s recommending teacher
- No postal applications are required to be submitted.
- Responding to our queries and instructions that will be sent to the applicants via email/ posted in the programme webpage may lead to the disqualification of the applicant.
Registration Fee

FAQ
1) May i know the timings for the classes in week days?
In the afternoon, starting after 3PM. The exact timings would be updated soon.
2) My B.Sc. results have not been declared. How do I fill marks for papers from this course?
If it is not declared, you just mention the same in the form.
3) I do not study in the Semester System and I have Annual Examinations only. How do I fill up the form?
Write 0 as the number of papers in semester 1, and write “NA, Annual System” in semester 1 marks. You may also include the remark that you are following Annual System of examinations in the last field (in the last page of the form).
4) I do not study in the Semester System and I have Annual Examinations only. Results of my annual examination are not available / our annual examinations are not yet held. How do I fill up the form?
Write 0 as the number of papers in semester 1, and write “NA, Annual System” in semester 1 marks. Do the same for Semester 2. You may also mention these facts in the last field of the application form.
5) Can a M.Sc pass out/B.Sc third year student apply for the MTTS program?
No. Please check the eligibility criterion given above! Only second year undergraduate students (that is, students who have just completed first year of their undergraduate programs) should apply.
6) Do I have to put my marks as grades as appearing in my mark sheet or need I convert it to percentage?
You may do either. It will be better if you know how to convert it to percentage (out of 100) and enter the percentage.
