In this lecture we will discuss proof of an interesting lemma. given by F Riesz The proof involves several concepts from the undergraduate level some of which we never applied during our course, for example, the structure of an open set in the set of real numbers with the usual metric This lemma is behind the theorem which states that every real valued function on the Interval [a, b] of bounded variation is differentiable almost everywhere. Further. It is helpful to understand the general formulation of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
