My institute/college name is not listed in the application system. How do I apply?

You have two ways to solve this.

1) Add your institute at this page and then login once again to prepare and submit your application. You will see your institute also listed.

OR

2) Instead of searching for your institute name while filling your institute details in the 4dspace application form, you may manually type/enter your institute name with other details and proceed.

Since I studied __ standard during pandemic. I didn’t have an exam, and so I don’t have the corresponding marks. Please guide me how to apply with this information.

You may choose “Grade” for the year in which your exams were not held due to the pandemic, and enter the value as “Pass” or “Fail” for this entry, as is appropriate.

What should I do if I have some corrections in my submitted application?

In the application process, after filling and validating the data, you are supposed to lock the data so that an automated email from our system will go directly to your recommending teacher. Only applications in the locked state could be viewed and recommended by the teacher. Once he recommends the application, there is no way to make further corrections.
Before the submission of recommendation, you may correct the application in the following two ways:
a) Once 6 hours (which is the mandatory lock period) after locking the form elapsed, you may unlock it, make necessary corrections, and lock it again.
b) Within 6 hours, you may request your teacher to unlock your application from from the recommendation interface which the teacher alone can access.

I am seeing red coloured section names while saving the application form. Why is this?

This is can be due to two reasons:

1) You have not filled completely all the sections (like Personal Details, Present course & Institute, …, Mathematics Activities).

You may fill one section at a time (say, Personal Details first), then click on “Save without validation”. Then fill the next section (say Present course & Institute), again click on “Save without validation”, then move to the next section and so on.

Once you have finished filling all the sections, and saved without validation, you may click on “Validate and Save” to validate the data entered. In case if some fields in some sections are filled with invalid input, those section names will appear with red background. Click on those section names, and check the data entered there. Again click on “Validate and Save”

2) You might have filled all the fields, but some of the fields in some sections might have some invalid input. Check the section names with red background  and see the data entered there. Correct it if needed.

While filling HSC performance details, need I provide marks/grades for the papers in both 11th and 12th?

If your final HSC certificate grades/ marks are arrived at considering both the 11th and 12th performance, then you need to fill both 11th and 12th paper marks. Total of the marks in these two years also needs to be provided.

But if only 12th class performance is considered for your final grades in HSC, only that year performance needs to be entered in to the form.

Why am I unable to able to recommend an applicant online even though I received a link? OR the link for recommendation I received has expired. What should I do? OR my teacher did not receive a recommendation requesting link. What should I do?

 

 

 

If your teacher did not get the recommendation request email from our system if the link for recommendation expired after its validity period (which is one of the reasons for non-working recommendation submission link), your teacher may please  proceed as follows:

  1. Visit https://4dspace.mtts.org.in/otp-login.php?login_mode=pgm_appln_reco
  2. Click on Submit recommendation to a programme
  3. Click on Generate OTP, give your email address (the same email address which the applicant has given in his application data)
  4. Check your email inbox after 15-30 minutes (usually the time required will be much shorter). Check your spam folder also for the OTP.
  5. Use it to login, and after logging in,
  6. Click on “See list of MTTS Trust organized programme to submit recommendation”
  7. Click on “Submit recommendation” under the programme to which the applicant has submitted his/her details.

What documents am I supposed to submit/upload along with the application?

You are submitted to provide in the application form the following details:

  1. Your fullname, phone number, contact details
  2. Institute and course details with full institute address and affiliation
  3. Your academic performance (beginning with SSC/10th class) details
  4. Recommending teacher details (like his/her email address, phone number, affiliation)
  5. Your participation in MTTS or any other mathematics related programmes.

However, there may be some more information required in the application form. You may login and see the form to get a better idea.

You need not upload or send copies of your certificates. But we may ask for it later during the application screening process if required.

Need I fill the complete application in the first login itself? Will my data be saved if I only partially fill the form?

If you use the same email address for login, and if you save your data frequently using the button given for that under the application form, your data will be saved.

There is an autosave feature also available with the form which should automatically save the form in every 5 minutes. However, due to erratic network connections, and browser features, this may not work all the times. Hence clicking on “Save data” frequently will be the better option to avoid loosing the input data.

 

Questions related to MTTS 2023

When will the programme be held? What will be the schedule?

Please check the programme webpage for dates.

There will be four sessions every day; two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Morning sessions will be followed by a discussion session. Exact schedule will be distributed to the selected candidates later.

 

What will be the subjects that are going to be taught in the workshop?

Level O: Subjects taught will be any three chosen from Foundations, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, and Number Theory.
Levels I and II: Subjects taught will be three chosen from Algebra, Analysis, Topology and Linear Algebra.

Will there be any tests or exams at the end of the programme?

No, but there may be some form of periodical evaluation, mainly for self-assessment.

Will the participants get a certificate at the end of the programme?

Certificates will be issued to the participants upon successfully completing the program.

Can one join the programme after a few days?

No, you will not be permitted to join after the first day. Exceptions may be made for former participants with good performance, but prior approval will be needed even in these cases.

Whom should I contact if I have technical difficulties in application or recommendation process?

If you have any technical difficulties in the application or recommendation process, please send an email to info.mtts2023@gmail.com. Please be very precise regarding your  problem, for example, if you are having difficulty in getting the name of your district accepted, please mention that, along with the district name which is creating the problem. It will be easier for us to identify the problem if you send us screenshot of the page where you are facing some trouble.

Can a teacher who is not currently teaching me fill the recommendation form?

It is better to get a recommendation from a current teacher. However, given the pandemic situation at present there is a possibility that M.Sc students in their first year (applying to Level 2) may not find a recommending teacher from their present institution, as no teacher might be much familiar with his/her mathematics background. They may, if necessary take the recommendation from one of their teachers who has taught them in the last 3 years at the B.Sc./equivalent level.

General Questions

Will the programme help the students in getting jobs? getting admissions in good institutions?

The main aim of the programme is to train the students so that they can work independently, achieve certain level of confidence in the learning/understanding mathematics and to give them a perspective. We do NOT think of this programme as a job-training programme of any kind. However, the knowledge and attitude acquired during the programme, if further cultivated by the participants, seem to help them achieve better goals in academic career.

How are the courses different from the ones we have at the colleges?

Radically different. In fact, it takes about three days for the participants to get used to our way of doing things.
The faculty is from various leading institutions of the country and is not confined to the institute of the venue. People who are experts in the field, who are known for their teaching and have a commitment towards high quality mathematics in India are chosen to give the courses. As a rule each course is taught by a single expert. This paves the way for better interaction (over a period of 4 weeks) between the faculty and students and also imparts a perspective of the field among the students. The faculty is requested to be present for all the sessions — not for their sessions only! In the problem sessions all students are asked to do problems. All the four teachers of a level will actively help the students during the problem sessions. The teachers identify the difficulties of the individual students. Giving individual attention is one of the unique features of this programme. Some reading material is also provided.
The teacher keeps on asking questions, sometimes well-formulated, sometimes vague, to give you a taste of how mathematics is discovered. He most often develops a proof from the ideas given by the students and asks them to write in the way a text book will present it. There will be a great deal of pressure on you to think on your own and take active participation in the course.
Unless you are really keen and ready to work very hard , please do not apply for the programme. For, in the past, many students were totally shaken by our approach and were unable to cope with the pressure. But if you are seriously interested in pursuing higher mathematics, this programme will be immensely useful to you.
The programme also provides a platform for students with (linguistically, culturally and mathematically) varied back-ground to come together and interact with peers and experts in the field. This serves two purposes: i) the participants come to know where they stand academically and what they have to do to bring out their full potential and ii) they establish a rapport with other participants and teachers which help them shape their career in mathematics. This allows them to see for themselves how they compare with other students.

What subjects are taught? Are they pure or applied?

The emphasis is on the so-called pure mathematics. The courses are on algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, topology. The medium of instruction is English. It is very essential that the participants should be able to communicate in English, at least in mathematics.

Do we have to have a great deal of back-ground in mathematics?

No. The courses are usually designed in such a way that 50% of the concepts may be already familiar to most of the students. The main aim of the course, as was mentioned above, is to promote thinking. As a matter of fact, it was observed in the previous programmes that the students who learn a topic for the first time in the programme have performed well as the courses progressed. It is not our aim to introduce a lot of jargon to the students. In stead, we introduce the very basic concepts and train the students thoroughly.

Questions related to Online MTTS 2021

Why is MTTS 2021 conducted online?

Due to the pandemic situation in the country in 2020, the MTTS annual summer camp for 2020 was initially decided to be cancelled (after the selection process was complete). But on seeing large number of requests from the selected participants, the MTTS Trust took the decision to conduct it online. While it is not a replacement for the usual onsite workshop, this experience, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participants, gave the Trust the confidence to conduct other programmes online when onsite workshops are not feasible.
Since the current situation prevents the Trust from conducting an onsite camp this year too, based on the past year’s experience, the Trust  has decided to conduct this year’s summer camp online.

Which online platform will be used for MTTS 2021?


The sessions will be conducted in an online mode, using the Zoom platform.

What are the technical requirements for participating in the programme?

The applicant should have access to the internet, and will be required to be online for at least 4 hours each programme day
The applicant is required to submit his application using a gmail id. This id will be used for all communication from the beginning of the application process to the end of the programme (if selected).
Note that institutional id’s that are not ending with gmail.com (even if login to these emails are through gmail interface) may create troubles in participation due to various technical constriants.
Selected participants will be required to create a Zoom account using the given gmail id.

How are the sessions different from a regular online class?

The teaching methodology in MTTS is radically different from regular classrooms. Resource persons refrain from delivering well-polished lectures. All the sessions are highly interactive, and the participants are asked to think, experiment, formulate and prove mathematical results on their own at every stage. The aim of the instructions is not to give routine lectures but to stimulate the participants to think and discover mathematical results on their own.
Questions are asked during the session, and time given for the participants to think along. The questions asked are different than encountered in usual class, and are meant to provoke thinking. An example of a question asked is, “What do you think is the next question?” The definitions, and proofs of theorems are derived using inputs from the participants. The emphasis is on thinking first, refining the thoughts, and then putting them down on paper into a standard “textbook” definition, statement, or proof. This has been the hallmark of MTTS programmes over the years, and has been successfully implemented in the online version as well.
Each online session consists of a lecture part, followed by a mandatory discussion session. The discussion sessions are facilitated by MTTS faculty and mentors designated for the same. The faculty for this programme are active mathematicians with strong commitment to teaching and are chosen from various leading institutions in the country. The mentors are students and faculty who understand the spirit of the MTTS teaching methodology.
