The Initiation into Mathematics (InitMath) programme is a regional-level camp organized under the aegis of the MTTS Trust. An InitMath Programme will be organized at the Department of Mathematics, National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut), Kozhikode, Kerala during December 14–19, 2026. The programme is funded by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM).
Background
The Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) programme is one of the most popular and significant training programmes in India. It has been running every summer since 1993, in various venues around the country, including online for 2020 and 2021, the two years impacted by Covid. These annual summer camps have made an impressive impact on the mathematical scene in the country.
A large number of applications are received from all parts of the country for the annual summer camps, but due to limited resources and seats, many deserving students do not have the opportunity to participate in them. To overcome this and to provide opportunities to a large number of students at regional levels, the InitMath programme (formerly known as miniMTTS) has been conducted since 2010. This camp of one week’s duration runs along the same lines as the annual summer camp.
Academic Programme and Aim
Three fundamental courses in mathematics will be taught by faculty who are highly experienced in the teaching methodology of MTTS. The intent of the instruction is not to give routine lectures, but to stimulate the participants to think and discover mathematical ideas and results on their own. The aim of the programme is:
- to expose bright young students to the excitement of doing mathematics,
- to promote independent mathematical thinking, and
- to prepare them for higher aspects of mathematics.
Eligibility
Second-year (3rd/4th semester) undergraduate students with Mathematics as one of their main subjects are eligible. Students from Kerala and neighbouring states will be given preference.
